Taman Connaught folk join forces to remove illegal ads in area

MORE than 100 Taman Connaught residents turned up to strip away illegal advertisements in their neighbourhood over the weekend.

Bandar Tun Razak MCA chairman Datuk Chew Yin Keen said it was the second time they were organising such an event and he was pleased with the turnout.

“I am also happy that about 10% of the participants today are foreign students staying in this neighbourhood.

“Malaysians paint a bad image of themselves by pasting these illegal advertisements, not only on places such as signboards and lamp-posts, but also on private property like along the walls of shops.

“I was told the culprits would replace the advertisements almost the same day as they were removed.

“There is a by-law in place but enforcement is lacking,” he said after launching the gotong-royong session at the community basketball court.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Bandar Tun Razak branch office head Ismadi Sakirin said their staff cleaned the stickers on a daily basis but it was never enough to keep it clean.

“There are just too many people going around sticking these advertisements everywhere.

“I urge the residents and shopowners to be our eyes and report to the authorities if they spot the culprits,” he said.

Chew suggested that DBKL put up a designated board in commercial areas for the people to put up such advertisements.

“Perhaps with a designated board, the culprits will no longer need to stick these bills and posters anywhere they please,” he said.

Rev Aris Siew from Praise City Church said he was happy that many of its members comprising foreign students volunteered to help in the cleaning session.

“It was a great way for the students to mingle with their Malaysian neighbours,” he said.

Well done leaders for encouraging your cell/team to come. What a way to begin the year. I asked the staff if they believe that this can be repeated - all answered - YES!
